ABOUT AMON AMARTH

Formed in 1992 from the ashes of the grindcore band Scum (1988-1991), Amon Amarth is a Viking metal band from Tumba, Sweden, and was founded by Johann Hegg on vocals, Olavi Mikkonen on lead guitar, Ted Lundström on bass, Anders Hansson on rhythm guitar, and Niko Kauniken on drums. The name of the band comes from the Sindarin name of Mount Doom, a volcano in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth and its melodic death metal mainly pertains to Viking mythology and history.

CAREER

1992-1997: Early recordings

The band recorded its first demo, Thor Arise in 1993. The demo was considered too rough for release but became popular with fans of extreme metal. A second demo, The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter, was released in 1994, selling 1000 copies.

Two years later, the band signed with Pulverised and in April 1996 they released their debut EP, Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds, on the label on MCD.

1998-2007: Signed with Metal Blade

After the release of Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds, Amon Amarth signed with Metal Blade Records. The band released its debut album, Once Sent from the Golden Hall, on February 10, 1998. The album was well received and led to multiple tours of Canada and the US, music videos for several of the album’s tracks, as well as appearances at music festivals and in many metal magazines.

Guitarist Anders Hansson left the band in 1998, just before it was about to embark on a tour alongside Deicide, Six Feet Under, and Brutal Truth. He was replaced by Johan Soderberg. The line-up changed further after the tour when Martin Lopez quit, joining Opeth, and Fredrik Andersson (ex-A Canorous Quintet) joined in his place. With this new line-up in place, the band recorded and released its second studio album, The Avenger, in 1999. To promote the album, they supported Morbid Angel on the X-Mas Massacre Festivals Tour.

2001 saw the release of the group’s most aggressive album to date, The Crusher. Following the release, they toured with  Marduk and Vader, performing at the No Mercy Festival. Amon Amarth’s first American tour had been scheduled for Autumn 2001 but was postponed until January 2002, due to the September 11 attacks. That April, the band toured Europe with Vomitory and in August performed at Wacken Open Air to a crowd of 12,000. November 2002 saw the release of Verses the World, their fourth studio album. The Viking Edition of the album was also released, which features a bonus disc  Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds EP as well as their two demos; Thor Arise, The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter, and a German version of "Victorious March" entitled "Siegreicher Marsch" which was on Once Sent from the Golden Hall.  The group toured extensively to promote the album, until January 2004 when they began work on Fate of the Norns, which was released that September.

In May 2006, they released the live DVD Wrath of the Norsemen. With Oden on Our Side, the follow-up to Fate of the Norns was released on September 22, 2006, and was their first album to enter the Billboard charts – the Top Heatseekers and the Independent Albums chart – peaking at number 15 and number 26 respectively. It also reached the top 30 of the German, Austrian, and Swedish Albums charts.

The band embarked on their first tour of Australia and New Zealand, supporting Dimmu Borgir, in early 2008, after finishing a US and Canadian tour with Sonic Syndicate and Himsa.

2008-2014: Renewed contract with Metal Blade

When their contract with Metal Blade was up, Amon Amarth extended it for three more albums. Their next move was to release the album Twilight of the Thunder God, which features guest appearances from Lars-Göran Petrov of Entombed, Roope Latvala of Children of Bodom, and the cello metal band Apocalyptica. To accompany the album, the band commissioned an eight-page comic strip based on Norse mythology. The album reached number 50 in the U.S, number six in Germany, number 10 in Finland, number in Sweden, number 14 in Austria, and number 21 in Switzerland, as well as reaching number seven on Revolver Magazine's Top 20 Albums list that year.

In October 2008, the band embarked on an extensive US tour with support from Ensiferum, Belphegor, and The Absence. They returned to the US in 2009  with Goatwhore, Skeletonwitch, and Lazarus A.D. and later in 2010 with Holy Grail and Eluveitie. 2009 also saw the band win the Best Breakthrough Act award at Metal Hammer's prestigious Golden Gods Awards. It was also the year that they supported Slayer on their Unholy Alliance Chapter III European tour and the year that Amon Amarth played its first show in India, headlining the Deccan Rock Festival in Bangalore.

On 27 January 2011, Metal Blade Records released the band's first single from their upcoming album Surtur Rising, titled "War of the Gods", on YouTube. The album was released on March 29, 2011 and was supported by a four-month world tour with Children Of Bodom and Ensiferum, among others. After Surtur Rising, the band concentrated on playing festivals, performing at  Wacken Open Air in 2012, Hellfest 2013, Download Festival 2013, Sweden Rock Festival, and Mayhem Festival 2013.

Deceiver of the Gods, Amon Amarth’s ninth studio album, was released on June 25, 2013.

2015-2017: Departure of Fredrik Andersson and Jomsviking

After 17 years in the band, drummer Fredrik Andersson left Amon Amarth in March 2017. One year later, the group released its 10th studio album, Jomsviking. The album reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 and number four on the US Top Rock Albums chart. It also charted in 12 other countries and hit the top spot on the German and Austrian Albums charts, as well as reaching the top 10 in Canada, Finland, Sweden, and Switzerland. The band performed four intimate album release shows in London, Paris, Tilburg, and Berlin that March to celebrate the release of Jomsviking. That fall, they supported Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, and Metal Church on the Dystopia tour in the United States and headlined a tour in the UK and Ireland with Testament as special guests. In September, the band announced Jocke Wallgren as their full-time drummer.

In November 2017, Amon Amarth released a self-titled video game with Ride & Crash Games centered around the band's songs and lyrics.

2018-2022: Berserker

The band released a new song, titled "Raven's Flight", in March 2019 as the lead single of their upcoming studio album. The album, Berserker, was released that May. It reached number one in Switzerland and Germany, and number 47 on the Billboard 200. That month, they embarked on a North American tour as part of Slayer's final world tour, also featuring Lamb of God and Cannibal Corpse. In September they toured North America again, this time as headliners with fellow Swedish bands Arch Enemy, At the Gates, and Grand Magus in support.

2022-present: The Great Heathen Army

The band’s 12th studio album, The Great Heathen Army, is released on August 5, 2022.
